This easy sweet chutney recipe is not just delicious; dates and tamarind have many health benefits too.
Dates are a very good source of potassium and also contain fibre and protein. Tamarind has been used in traditional medicine and has many uses including treatment of constipation and sunstroke. Parts of the tamarind plant are used in the treatment of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. The addition of jaggery, a good source of iron, ensures there is no harmful refined sugar in the sweet chutney recipe and this makes all the difference to health watchers.
While following our Yummefy-ed sweet chutney recipe, do remember to soak the tamarind (as it contains seeds and fibre) and make tamarind paste before the start of cooking. Once pressure cooked, tamarind paste is easier to handle than whole tamarind.
Dates impart their unique taste to our tamarind sweet chutney recipe which is unmatched. Opt for plump dates and remove their seeds before making this chutney. If you do not have dates you can use more amount of jaggery instead, but that changes the flavour of this recipe substantially. We highly recommend that you try preparing this chutney with dates at least once.
You can use store bought tamarind paste to make this sweet chutney recipe with dates if you are short on time but we prefer making the tamarind paste ourselves and would recommend the same to you for a more natural and preservative-free flavour.
You can choose to make the sweet chutney with tamarind thick and sticky or slightly thinner and of a flowing consistency depending on the end use. For dishes like samosa, kachori, and pakodas it can be made of a thick consistency. But to drizzle or mix it in dishes such as dahi batata puri, bhel puri or papdi chaat, or to pour in to pani puri it needs to be of a thinner consistency for the ease of use.
Once you have made this sweet chutney recipe with dates you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It stays well in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Alternately, you can store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 month. Whenever you use the sweet chutney make sure to take it out with a clean and dry spoon.
Having experimented with many recipes, we have come to the conclusion that is the best sweet chutney recipe available and is highly versatile. You can drizzle it over aloo ki tikki along with hari chutney or brighten up your kulle chaat with it. Mix this khajur aur imli ki chutney in your sev puri, dahi batata puri, or bhel puri along with spicy hari chutney for maximum flavour. Piping hot fried chaat snacks such as samosa, kachori, moong dal pakodis, are incomplete without meetha chutney to dip them in. In North India, golgappa is served by placing a potato-chana mix in a golgappa shell and adding a dollop of date and tamarind chutney before filling it with flavoured spicy water. Papdi Chaat and Dahi Vada also have meetha chutney as a component. No chaat is complete without this condiment, and when you have some in the refrigerator, you are one step closer to making chaat at home.
