Originally a French dessert pudding, Pots de Crème’ when translated to English means ‘pots of cream’. This dessert’s origin can be traced back to the 17th century when it was served to the royal families. It gained popularity in 1970s again and went through a grand revival with every restaurant worth its salt (or actually sugar) would have some version of a chocolate pots de crème recipe on their menu. You may even want to call it a ‘pot of heaven’ once you spoon out some of this custard pudding and taste its creamy delightness.
This set custard pudding is just perfect to quench any chocolate or sugar craving. In our recipe we use coffee to amplify the flavor of chocolate but you can omit chocolate completely and make a coffee pot de crème. Typically, pots de crème are prepared in vanilla or chocolate flavours but there’s no dearth for the flavours you can try with this easy pudding dessert. In case you set your mind on trying citrus-based flavours like lemon, kiwi, strawberry, raspberry or orange with pots de crème then make sure to add the citrus flavours after adding and mixing the eggs (at the time of adding vanilla) to avoid curdling. You can even give butterscotch, mango, pistachio and caramel flavours a try with this recipe.
It is best to prepare this chocolate pudding recipe in small cups or ramekins. Chocolate Pots de Crème being a rich baked custard, is usually eaten in small quantities, therefore you either set it in small bowls or go for a larger family style bowl filled half way up. Note that you will need to adjust the cooking time if you are using a larger bowl. While we have been told that this pudding dessert remains fresh for upto a week if refrigerated, and can therefore be prepared well in advance for a party, we can’t claim firsthand knowledge of that because it’s usually eaten and cleaned up the day its made.

You can either find these porcelain cups in antique stores or museums. The French have even reserved a day to celebrate this custard pudding. Every year French public gorges on various flavors of Pots De Crème on August 27th which is celebrated as National Pots De Crème Day in France.
