Who doesn’t love momos, delicious bite-sized savoury steamed dumplings stuffed with a variety of fillings and savoured along with a lip-smacking hot and spicy momo chutney?
There is no one “authentic” momo chutney recipe. Momo chutneys vary widely from region to region, whether it is Nepal, Tibet, or India (like the popular Nepali momo chutney recipe). Apart from regional variations, these dipping sauces also vary depending on where they are served—in high-end restaurants or in street food stalls. Some momo chutney recipes are very spicy and hot, while some others are quite sour and tangy.
The momo chutney ingredients required for most of these versions are, in all likelihood, already available in your kitchen – tomatoes, garlic, fresh coriander leaves, lime juice and dry red chillies, or fresh green chillies as in our momo chutney recipe.
Green chillies in the momos chutney recipe impart a delicious and welcome kick to the usually mild momos and enhance their taste and flavour. Though, if desired, you can swap out the green chillies for dried red chillies to make a momo red chilli chutney recipe.
The dual colour of the momo chutney (orange and green) is imparted by the combination of tomatoes and fresh coriander leaves. We like to leave it just swirled together but not completely mixed.
This veg momo chutney recipe results in a medium-thick consistency and tends to stick to the momos, always a sign of a good dipping sauce.
You can whip up this street-style tomato chilli chutney for momos in a short time following our quick and easy recipe. All you need to do is char some tomatoes and then blend all the ingredients in two batches, and voila! Your delicious dipping sauce for momos is ready. No cooking is required.
Adjust the level of spiciness according to your taste or preference. For a hotter or spicier momo sauce, add a couple of extra green chillies and retain the seeds. Conversely, reduce the amount of chillies or deseed them for a milder sauce, especially for children.
