  • Spicy Masala Fried Fish | Quick And Easy Cooking

    This quick and spicy recipe is a traditional Chettinad one. A delicious seafood dish with dominant flavors of red chillies, garlic and ginger. A tasty weeknight dish that doesn't take much time to cook...though your guests will never guess that!

    INGREDIENTS

    4 teaspoon red chilli powder, mild, preferably made from goondu milagai
    1 teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon ginger, minced
    1/2 teaspoon garlic, heaping, minced
    1 teaspoon lime juice
    2 shallots, minced (opional)
    4 fish steaks, medium, preferably from an oily fish such as kingfish (seer fish or surmai)
    1/4 cup vegetable oil

    COOKING METHOD

    1. Mix all marinade ingredients together - along with the shallots, if using, along with 1 tablespoon of water, in a non-reactive bowl, and place fish steaks in the bowl, gently rubbing in the masala to coat the fish well.
       
    2. Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and let the fish marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
       
    3. Pour oil into a large shallow pan over high heat. When hot but not smoking, place steaks or fillets in the pan carefully, avoiding any splattering oil. Fry 2 minute per side or until the fish is cooked through.  Remove and drain on a paper towel lined plate.
       
    4. Serve hot.
