    Mulled Wine recipe: Red wine that is warmed, spiced, and sweetened with citrusy flavours…by far our favourite drink for the holiday season. A perfect cold weather drink that will warm you up and bring Christmas cheer.

    Mulled wine—a version of classic hot toddy—is a traditional holiday drink in many northern European countries, especially at Christmas. Whether it’s German Glühwein, French Vin Chaud, or Norwegian Gløgg, a mug or two is enough to get you all cosy and toasty and set the party mood.
     


     

    Our traditional mulled wine recipe takes just 5 minutes to prep and 15 minutes to cook. It’s easy to scale up by doubling or trebling the quantities of the ingredients. It’s easy to customize with your favourite spices. It’s easy to make on the stovetop or the slow cooker. It’s the best way to make your home smell all Christmassy. This hot mulled wine recipe is perfect for winter nights and holiday entertaining.  

    Mulled wine has many variations, but basically it consists of red wine, sweetened just a little bit, and mulled, or steeped, with spices and fruit. Sometimes it’s spiked with a little brandy.
     


     

    There’s just one important thing to remember when making what we consider the best mulled wine recipe—don’t allow the mulled wine to boil after the final addition of wine. This will result in the alcohol evaporating, leaving you with a non-alcoholic drink, albeit still delicious! We suggest that you just simmer it on really low heat.

    Inexpensive red wine is ideal. There’s no need for anything fancy because the flavours of the infused sugar, citrus, and spices mask the actual quality of the wine. So grab a bottle of low-cost wine and let’s begin mulling!
     


     

    Serve the mulled wine in mugs, goblets, or glasses, with a stick of cinnamon and a thin orange slice.

    INGREDIENTS

    100 gram sugar
    750 ml red wine, 1 bottle, divided use
    1 lime, sliced into ¼-inch rounds
    1 orange, or tangerine, sliced into ¼-inch rounds, plus 6 slices for garnish
    1/2 vanilla pod, from 1 vanilla pod sliced lengthwise
    1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, grated
    2 cloves (laung)
    1 piece cinnamon, 3-inches long
    1 star anise (chakra phool)

    Garnish:
    6 piece cinnamon, each 3 to 4-inches long
    6 slice oranges, or tangerine

    COOKING METHOD

    1. Add sugar to a saucepan and place on medium heat. Pour in just enough wine to cover the sugar, up to about a scant ½ cup (125 ml).  Toss in slices of lime and orange, vanilla pod, grated nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Bring the wine to a boil and continue to boil for 5 to 6 minutes till the wine reduces to a syrup.
       
    2. Reduce heat to low and add star anise.  Pour in the remaining wine and gently simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Do not allow the wine to boil as the alcohol will evaporate. You just want the flavours to blend and the mulled wine to be heated through.
       
    3. Remove from heat and ladle into 6 heatproof wine glasses or whiskey tumblers. Stand 1 cinnamon quill in each glass and garnish with a slice of orange. Serve hot.
