Our quick and easy mango lassi recipe shows you how to make mango lassi at home. Mango lassi—thick, creamy, smooth—is a popular drink at Indian restaurants during mango season, and now you can make this utterly yummy concoction of sweet mangoes and tangy yogurt at home. Whip up a delicious lassi at home with a handful of ingredients and slake your thirst and cool your body in a few minutes.
Tips for making the best mango lassi at home:
For the best results, follow our mango lassi recipe. Then choose fresh, very ripe, sweet mangoes. Make sure they have smooth flesh or pulp and are not fibrous. If the mangoes are fibrous, try and find non fibrous ones. If that is not possible, then strain the pulp before adding it to the lassi. If the mango isn’t adequately ripe, it will be too sour or acidic, and you will need to add more sugar or honey to balance the taste.
The colour and taste of the lassi drink will depend on the variety and quality of mango used. This is the most important factor for a really good mango lassi so go the extra mile to find delicious mangoes.
If fresh mangoes are not available, you may use canned mango pulp or frozen mangoes.
Add more mango puree if you want a stronger mango flavour, though our mango lassi recipe is delicious and beautifully balanced..
No sugar is necessary if the mango is sweet enough. Adjust the quantity of sugar or even honey in the mango lassi recipe to suit your taste.
For a traditional rich creamy mango lassi, use plain whole milk (full cream milk) and full-fat yogurt / curd. Low-fat yogurt will produce a thin lassi drink, and Greek yogurt might produce a far too thick beverage.
If you want your mango lassi to have a more milkshake-like flavour, add a scoop of mango ice cream and serve over crushed ice cubes.
You can also dilute the lassi to the consistency you prefer by adding either cold milk or water while blending all the ingredients.
Pour the mango lassi into serving glasses and garnish with finely chopped pistachios (pista) and a sprig of fresh mint.
We like to keep our mango lassi recipe pure, plain and simple, but you may also add flavourings of your choice before serving like a few strands of saffron, or a pinch of cardamom powder for a hint of spiciness, or even a few drops of rosewater. Another garnishing option is adding some diced mango to reinforce the mango flavour. Some recipes even add a pinch of soft light brown sugar or a squeeze of lime juice, but we prefer the traditional lassi drink.
