The deliciousness will surprise you and surely impress your friends…if you’re into that sort of thing!
The origin of the burger or hamburger is hotly debated, with stories of minced meat originating with Genghis Khan’s roving horse-borne hordes, to the hamburger in it’s present form, a patty of meat within two pieces of bread being invented in the US (via the German port of Hamburg) sometime in the late 19th century. It was popularized in the 20th century by street vendors and at events like fairs, where an easy-to-eat, “portable” food was needed, and then was quickly spread across the world by fast food brands. The burger became synonymous with American “fast food”.
Our homemade burger recipe uses mutton or lamb mince, mixed with delicious gentle spices, enhancing the overall flavour markedly. The size of the patty is large, each about 150 grams, making it generously thick when compared with the measly fast food burgers available. And once the patty is done and the cheese melted, it’s a simple burger recipe, just assembling fresh ingredients and condiments on a burger bun. You’re done in minutes – ready with a delicious burger – one of the best cheeseburgers available.

RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
Burger Patty:
1 tablespoon olive oil
75 grams onions, (about ¾ medium onion), finely chopped
3⁄4 teaspoon coriander powder
3⁄4 teaspoon black pepper powder
1⁄2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
1⁄2 teaspoon garam masala powder
300 grams keema (minced mutton)
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese
1⁄2 teaspoon mustard powder
1⁄2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 egg, lightly beaten
40 grams breadcrumbs, (about 1/3 cup)
4 tablespoons vegetable oil, to fry
2 slices cheese
To Assemble:
fried onion, to taste
2 burger buns
mayonnaise, to taste
mustard, to taste
1⁄2 tomato, thinly sliced
4 lettuce leaves
COOKING METHOD
- In a small frying pan or skillet over medium heat; pour olive oil. Add onion and sauté till golden brown, about 4 minutes. Add all spice powders: coriander, black pepper, cumin, garam masala and stir for about 1 minute. Remove from heat.
- Place keema (minced mutton) in a bowl; toss in parmesan cheese, mustard powder, salt, fried onion – spice powder mixture, and egg. Mix well with a spatula or fork till all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Make burger patties: spread breadcrumbs on a flat platter. Divide the keema mixture into two parts. Roll one part into a ball between your palms, and flatten slightly to form a large, smooth fat disk. Dredge the patty in breadcrumbs, shake off excess breadcrumbs, then place in a plate. Repeat the same process with remaining mixture. This should make about 2 large burger patties.
- Place a heavy frying pan or skillet on high heat; add oil. Once oil is hot but not smoking, carefully place the patties in the oil. Reduce heat to medium, and fry till golden brown or about 6 minutes each side, adjusting heat as needed. Place one cheese slice on top of each patty and cover pan with a tight-fitting lid for about 1 minute till the cheese melts. Remove patties from pan and place on kitchen paper (cheese side up) to absorb excess oil.
- Assemble burger: slice the burger buns in half horizontally in case they are whole. Generously spread mayonnaise on the cut side of one half and mustard on the other half. Place 3 to 4 thin tomato slices on the mayonnaise half, top with 2 lettuce leaves, the burger patty, and fried onion to taste. Top with the mustard half of the burger bun. Repeat the same process for the second burger.
- Serve with ketchup, potato chips, and other condiments.
