Atte ka Halwa recipe: Halwa is one of the most popular varieties of sweet dishes in India. So prevalent is this sweet that the generic Hindi word for the person who makes Indian sweets and desserts and sells them is Halwai – the halwa maker.
Halwa, or halva as it’s also known, is not just found in India. While halwa variations are popular in West Asia, Central Asia and, of course, India, halwa can also be found in Turkey, North Africa and amongst the Jewish diaspora. The origin of the word halwa is said to come from Arabic, and means a sweet dish.
In India, there are numerous versions of halwa, varying from suji ka halwa, atte ka halwa, gajar ka halwa (carrot halwa), to a range of halwas encompassing nuts (badam halwa), vegetables, pulses…the list goes on. Many of these halwas are celebratory, made for special occasions, while others are delicious everyday affairs, devoured happily after meals as dessert.
Suji ka halwa, made from semolina, and aata halwa, while also prepared and eaten at home, are the two halwas that are always made as prashad (religious offerings), especially in North India. They are offered to devotees as a blessing after religious ceremonies, and it’s not unusual to see people walking out of gurdwaras or temples with their hands cupped full of delectable halwa.
Our Atte ka Halwa recipe is not the gurdwara kada prashad (that recipe is coming to Yummefy soon too J ), but a mouth-watering longer-cooked version resulting in a deep, rich atta halwa. With ghee as the cooking medium, most recipes turn out delicious, but this easy whole wheat halwa with jaggery (gur), milk, and dry fruits is manna from the Gods, and deserves to be tried at home. It is a fairly easy recipe and our simple Atte ka Halwa recipe video takes you through it with step by step instructions, helping you recreate the same delicious dish in your kitchen.
